Joey - Re: "I had thought they reached some type of agreement a few weeks back. Comments?"

Intel was dancing around with TCI but apparently sat out the last dance.

The real problem is designing/manufacturing/selling $10 or $20 chips for 5% profits. If you have no other business, that 5% is Nirvana. If you're Intel, the analysts would KILL YOU if you went after 5% profits while you were accustomed to 60% margins.

So, one way to look at it is that your competitors may steel the entire business (set-top boxes) but they may may not make any money at it. To Intel's credit, they didn't abandon their financial principles and jump into that game.

If you look at the existing set top box market or the color TV market, Intel does not participate at all - and who trashes Intel for this? Yet, who in those markets is making any where near the money Intel is making?

With Intel's new graphics chip, they will begin to develop strategies and products for these markets. Better they do so in a manner that can bring profits as well as volume.
