Same thing in China or Iran.

In the USA, anything embarrassing to the government, is routinely classified. So, the only way you find out what your government is doing, is for some brave person to break the law and reveal it. Then they may be charged with treason, which means the death penalty.

All governments, regardless of ideology, obsessively try to control what citizens know.

Knowledge is power.
