| | | 6 ways the USA could have avoided the Ukraine war (if we wanted to):
1. Not expand NATO eastward. Leave neutral buffer States between NATO and Russia. Estonia is indefensible. Romania adds nothing to our security.
2. expand east, but don’t place any offensive weapons in the new members. Just token infantry as a trip-wire.
3. Clearly say, to both Russia and Ukraine, that Ukraine will never be in NATO.
4. Beginning in 1991, make aid to Ukraine and Georgia, dependent on good treatment of ethnic minorities. Autonomy, maybe UN peace-keepers, for Russian-speaking parts of Ukraine.
5. Stop saying, “we won the Cold War.” This humiliates Russia. Embrace and praise their rejection of Communism, instead of treating them like a defeated enemy.
6. Stop using Neocon methods. We have tried Regime Change and Nation-Building, in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Haiti, etc., and now Ukraine. Every time, the result is a bloody mess. |
