All of these deities had some beautiful, wise things to say. That is not the issue - though the Buddha was very different from Jesus in terms of his teachings. The reason why the founding fathers chose to make separation of religion from State was twofold: 1. they were basically unitarians and did not want to alienate one religion from the other. 2. they needed the Catholics to fight in the war against the British and they would not do so unless they were promised freedom of religion and equal rights in terms of the practice of their faith. The Puritans, who were basically religious bigots, relented on practical grounds, because they needed the Catholics to defeat the British. There were a couple of colonies at the time that declared Protestantism the official religion of their colonies and that did not sit very well with the Catholics. The Catholics wanted their religious rights protected under the Constitution before they would fight for Freedom. So, yes,the Founding Fathers were quite tolerant and had no problem accepting Free practice of different religions in the American State. The Puritans were largely intolerant bigots, who grudgingly accepted the practice of other religions for practical purposes of defeating the British. These two strains are present in American society today. Those who are tolerant because they are not sure which religion is right and those who think their religion is the superior or correct one. As a religious minority, it is very easy to sniff out which category one belongs to.
