A fully autonomous electric car is a nice idea, but its market seems most likely to include mainly rental vehicles that are used for relatively short trips, especially in urban areas. I can envision autonomous vehicles running errands at a cost well below owning a vehicle in urban areas, including finding and paying for parking space.

Suppose that fully autonomous vehicles would cost about 30 percent more than equivalent driver operated vehicles. Adding costs of insurance, registration, driver licenses, vehicle maintenance, and parking for a conventional vehicle could make autonomous driving vehicles competitive, but mainly in higher density urban areas. Seems like tests of those vehicles in places like Shanghai would give Jidu Automotive and its partners enough data to determine whether the demand is there or can be scaled up to even a broader market. I can't see autonomous driving vehicles replacing conventional vehicles in areas where parking is cheap or free. But I can see a broad market for conventional vehicles that use many of the safety features needed for autonomous driving, which would at least reduce conventional vehicle insurance costs.
