Here is what I think happens when one smokes pot.
First, each hemisphere is its own brain and when they slice the corpus callosum two distinct personalities come out. And it is even more complicated according to Robert Ornstein who thought we have many brains. But that is for another post.
The left brain helps us spot the lions in the bush.
So generally, we function with the left brain which is our (sequential logic brain), math, language, pattern recognition, analysis, etc. It keeps us alive by giving us a reliable view of our environment, and is how we are hardwired
BUT according to Carl Sagan (Broca's Brain) , the left brain rides rough shod over the right brain. The right brain is involved in the "simultaneous juxtapositioning of things" ( I love that definition-lol). Big picture.
But the left brain gets hobbled by pot and cannot function as well, and that allows the right brain to soar, which is about "seeing " the world through another lens that looks at the big picture.
But the right brain is not very good at figuring things out. If anyone doubts this just try playing poker stoned. I have done it many times and my poker game is very impaired stoned. I usually lose -lol. And straight, I usually win.
So in effect what "pot smokers" like about pot, without realizing it, is that they can shift into a totally different perspective of reality.
Just as valid, but different and the right brain has insights (grass insights) we used to call them.
And we can often see when stoned e.g. when we have been wrong about something e.g. being insensitive.
So it is a way, to safely, more or less (it doesn't seem to poison the body like alcohol), experience reality differently. Sort of like looking through a telescope.
Most do it just for the fun, seeing beauty, laughing is easier, and music appreciation is enhanced, movies more intense, and food tastes great-lol. Especially pizza.
But it can also be used to gain insight.
And unlike alcohol, which causes people to get mean and men to beat their wives, pot gentles people down and acts sort of like a sedative. A stoner will watch Sesame street with their kids, and it doesn't scare kids when adults are on it, like alcohol does.
And it dos not cause the brain damage alcohol does e.g. fetal alcohol syndrome which is pandemic in many areas..
