I've been thinking about the iCar. I was thinking how many "good idea" cars have failed.
1950s Nash cars got 30 miles to the gallon, despite being all steel (heavy) and had a way futuristic panel. The Tucker with its three headlights. Mazda's rotary engine. The Delorean stainless steel car with gull wings.
It's not enough to have a good idea, or even a good design. The business is notoriously hard in which to make a profit. How many have gone under, are nearly profitless, or have been absorbed by bigger companies?
Then contrast those companies with Toyota which is notoriously conservative. They design incrementally, are rarely revolutionary, late to the party with electric vehicles (albeit early with hybrids) but they are ramping up on electric.
10 Cool Cars That Ended Up Bankrupting Their Manufacturers
Reading this it occurs to me most of these are mosty higher end cars... presumably Apple's target market.
Interesting to think about... makes me wonder why there wasn't a liquid metal puck... I was just reading about the Army's newer howitzers... they're much lighter because they now use extensive amounts of expensive titanium. Will Apple try to make a titanium car? When I visited a Tesla showroom I was impressed by their cast aluminum chassis. It WAS cool.
I think the odds are Tesla's truck will be a failure. I expect 99% of builders look at it like I do... its damn stupid.
My kingdom for a design like a no nonsense small 1995 Toyota Truck.
Nash dashboard... silly but great for monster movies.

30 mpg... all steel... think about how much that weighs... leg room, steel dash, steel bumpers, steel grill... new cars don't even have bumpers.

Streamlined... SKIRTs in front and rear!!! If Apple made one out of Titanium I might consider it. |
