JM, not the color being sensed...the heat absorbed by different colors differs enough to be detected, by relatively normal sensing abilities.

as I PM'd
if light is shining on the coins, there will be a temperature differential...so you could feel the temp difference....it does say, something about in the dark though but doesn't say you can't turn a light on them, however the light had to be on in the beginning, to see the blues and reds

For example, if you shine light on a blue object, it will absorb the warm red light, and will be warmer than a red object which would reflect that light.

my other, non-math solution

also, since it says piles...I'd memorize two blue coins and put them on two separate piles, therefore having two piles with the same number of coins of the same color on top...
