| | | Another crack of the whip as we go from popping champagne corks to sad trombones. The NASDAQ Composite shedding 4%, and the S&P Biotech index off -7.2%.
As discussed last report, we’re now using my revised measure of importance for recent variations in the stock issues. Which means that we can take notice of CABA’s recent +27% gain, building on the previous week’s gain. Six of the other entries in the Recent Top 5/Bottom 5 are now visible. The -61% plunge of GOSS is due to recent rules on the Phase 2 study of their hypertension drug “fall short of expectations”. ESPR’s loss of -46% for the week is somewhat inexplicable given a press release this week described positive news from an ongoing trial. I guess the market disagreed.
The contest portfolios had a rough week, with the portfolio average and median dropping -6.5% and -6.3% respectively. Only ERIK managed a positive return (up $0.23%) adding $121 to their portfolio, thanks to a 10% position in CABA. The second place portfolio for the week, BMAZ001, was the other portfolio with a stake in CABA, cutting their loss for the week to only -1.1%, small enough to make it into the top 10 YTD portfolios for the first time, congratulations. DIEGOSAN lost less than GENEGURU so adding $1,500 cushion so that they are now separated by $6,000. Alas GENEGURU’s loss pushed their portfolio back into the red for the year.
I applaud all of you for participating in this charity contest, no matter how your picks fared. Keep in mind, the way this contest is structured, your portfolios are locked in from the day you picked them for an entire year. Since nobody has a crystal ball to foresee future events, which for biotech in particular can be extremely hazy, it does not reflect what you would have done to change your portfolio if you were managing it in real life.
I thank everyone for participating in this contest. It is for fun, it is for sharing ideas, and it will benefit charity.
