It can be said that Russia already defeated the courageous, well trained and well armed Ukrainian military - by last Summer. Now, they’re fighting the newly rebuilt and re-armed NEW Ukrainian army, which (apparently) includes several thousand foreign volunteers.

I don’t think Russia ever planned to conquer ALL of Ukraine. In fact, as early as last March, when Zelensky proposed peace based on the Minsk accords, the Russians jumped on it. Wanted it. But, it didn’t happen - between pressure from Boris Johnson and the U.S. Admin, the guy changed his tune - literally - overnight. Now, he won’t even talk about peace until he gets back all territories including Crimea - plus reparations. And Russia’s leadership would have to stand trial.
