The Bombay Company, Inc. Names President and Chief Operating Officer

FORT WORTH, Texas, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bombay Company, Inc. (NYSE: BBA) today announced the hiring of Ms. Carmie Mehrlander as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company. Ms. Mehrlander, 46, joins Bombay after serving in key management and merchandising positions at Home Shopping Network, Sears Roebuck & Company, Macy's East and Abraham & Straus. Ms. Mehrlander brings over 25 years of marketing and retailing experience to Bombay. She will also serve on Bombay's Board of Directors. Mr. Robert S. Jackson, 52, who has been interim President and Chief Executive Officer since April 1997 will continue in the position of CEO.

"I am very pleased that Bombay has found an executive and merchant with the broad range of talents that Carmie Mehrlander possesses," said Mr. Jackson. "Carmie brings a critical set of skills needed to drive top line sales growth."

The Board further announced that pursuant to its retirement policy, Mr. Niles, a director of the Company since 1982, and Chairman of the Board since September 1996, will retire from the Board effective May 21, 1998. Robert Jackson will become Chairman following Mr. Niles' retirement.
