It was handled very incompetently. China should have expanded ICU + importing mRNA vaccines. This would have brought them to par with the Western societies and now they'd be clear.

Instead they wasted the head start they got and worse never put in an endgame in place. No one in China has ever stated how they will move out of CV0 regiment.

When the infections pick up, Xi will have an unfortunate excuse to blame the rioters for his incompetence and lack of planning.

I also don't think that we are out of the woods either. There are variations that cannot be detected readily and seem to be unaffected by the vaccines. On top of that there are too many other illnesses floating around. My family and several others I know have had coughing/headache/sore throat/etc problems that just doesn't go away. It's not the black plague, but I've never had a "cold" like this in my whole life. It just lingers for too long and is more severe than usual. Something like 40% of school kids got it. I'm sure you've seen various news headlines about it.

Some have speculated that staying indoors and wearing masks has weakened our immune system. I think that is hogwash. The germs exist throughout the year and we should have built immunity to them during the summer. This is something new.

Unrelated, have you watched The Peripheral? One of the elements of the story is that some time after 2030 a sequence of events leads to major societal wipeout. These ranged from a computer virus infection that perpetually took down the power grid for months, to pandemic, to domestic terrorism by anti-technology people to.... Basically every nutcase scenario that you hear about comes true and the overall impact is more than what the world can take.

It's not a bad story, though Altered Carbon still remains my favorite cyberpunk.
