There is a lot of hype about the Fusion experiment. Big oil has a vested interest in keeping the power grid centralized around big production plants. There is a growing trend for a decentralized power grid with a million small power sources. A subtext to the fusion hype is to leave the grid alone and when fusion is ready we can just drop the lazers in where gas and coal plants used to be. With that configuration, if there is any type of power crisis before fusion is online, it will be necessary to handle it with natural gas or oil . There is no way to maintain a cartel around a distributed grid, and cartel is the game they know how to play.
