Sudan Leaders Killed in Plane Crash

.c The Associated Press

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - A plane carrying Sudan's vice president and other military and political leaders crashed Thursday in southern Sudan. Several on board were killed, the government said.

The plane crashed on landing and slid into the Sobat River, a statement from the presidency said.

''As a result a number of the cream of the leadership of the nation have been martyred,'' it said.

National television and state-run radio began broadcasting verses from the Koran, the Muslim holy book.

On board the plane were Sudan's vice president, Maj. Gen. Zubair Mohamed Saleh, and the culture and information minister, Brig. el-Tayeb Ibrahim Mohamed Kheir. There was no word on whether the two leaders were among those killed.

The plane crashed in Malakal, nearly 770 kilometers (440 miles) south of the capital Khartoum.

The officials were on a two-day visit to southern Sudan, where animist and Christian rebels are fighting for autonomy from the Arab, Muslim-dominated government in the north.
