My mom came from the classic small town down south where the local lawyer and the judge are big buddies. The lawyer was the executor of her mom's estate and kept it open until the last possible moment to suck out all the possible fees. Didn't take it all, but he got his chunk to make up for a miserable divorce he was going through. My parents made us executors for them, so that crap never happened again.

She did have a sister-in-law who got her hand in the till to buy a new car. That was discovered and paid back, fortunately.

My sister-in-law spent a couple of years untangling trusts that her parents had created, so those are off limits now too.

Some things are universal.
