I come from the dirt-poor camp....... I can still remember wiping my ass with newspaper in the outhouse out back. Kitchen sink had a hand pump the water came from a rain cistern in the basement. Hot water for bathing came from a wood stove that had two water tanks built into it. Bedrooms were upstairs heated with wood stoves downstairs; they relied on convection just a square hole in the bedroom floor covered with a grate. My days were happy full of purpose and I slept like a log at night.
