Was followed by this...

"Imo, pretty much everything in your post is spot on, and massively depressing since, as you say, there seems little or nothing we can do about it... at least at first glance.

Nothing we as non-billionaire individuals can do about any of it EXCEPT to educate ourselves and anyone / everyone we can. The 'education' of folks is exactly the mechanism used to gain the 'control' 'they' now have, and is the first necessary (if by itself likely insufficient) step in combatting it. Perhaps the tide overwhelms anyway, and mere scattered pockets of clear thinking and knowledge preservation remain... yikes.

European Dark Ages / Canticles of Liebowitz metaphors aside, I clipped just that first bit of your eloquent post for response because Mr. Gammon makes an assumption, as so many unthinkingly (or ignorantly) do, that is itself highly debatable (poisonous and intentionally self-defeating, societally suicidal, imo), and absolutely must be challenged and debated: Peak Oil = 'fossil' fuels are 'limited' and all we've found is all there is or ever will be, or else we can't get it, or else... any and every excuse there is to call it a 'non-renewable' or at least 'exhaustible' energy source, and since we can't get more, at some point, we should stop using it now.

1. The Peak Everything nonsense promulgated notoriously by Paul 'Population Bomb' Erlich and his ilk since the 1970s has been shown over and over and over to be complete crap in water, population, metals, energy, etc. In fact, for more than a century, doomsayers have been saying Peak Oil, yet we keep finding more oil, coal and natural gas, and what has already been discovered is, by itself and without future discoveries, enough to power the civilization we have for more than a century (2-3 centuries' worth of coal in the US alone).

2. Carbon-based energy sources (coal, oil, nat. gas) have NEVER been 'proven' to be 'fossil' fuels with a "they came from Jurassic plants and that'll never happen again in time for us to get any new stuff, there's only this much and no more" status: that is a theory, still maintained as a working one despite early and mounting evidence that said theory is false.
  • Quite a bit of USSR / Russian (gasp!) 1940s-1970s research that was most consistent with a bio-origin for such fuels was dismissed out of hand, including observations then (and many more since, here in the US and elsewhere) of oil fields refilling after they'd been 'exhausted'
    - Geological processes that create (not just reveal) those fuels have NOT been disproven, research into such processes have been terminated for lack of funding, NOT for lack of intriguing results

  • So much of what passes for Science these days is crap 'consensus' based on generally-accepted assumptions, especially ones with NO solid evidence to support them.

In a way, it is far more depressing to me, a scientist, than seeing 'modern' civilization play out the herd instinct to gravitate toward Strongmen as has been human nature as far back as we have records.
