I was chosen to work on a difficult, last minute software license renewal negotiation this past 2-weeks.

Thursday, I was on a Zoom call with the major markets head and another big manager, and I mentioned that they were holding a gun to our head threatening to have us go dark after the 1st of January.

Next thing I know, I'm being admonished by the major market head for making things personal and hostile and talking about threats. She was also talking about how we needed to make this a safe space for everyone to have a dialogue and de-escalate things.

It was HR software, and after I got out of the Zoom meeting, I was losing my mind about how this snowflake was accusing me of microaggressions and making a business meeting so ridiculous. I was going nuts about how this kid 10-years out of college was directing the tone of our conversation. She was also likely talking from an apartment in a gentrified neighborhood that 40-years ago hosted some of the most ruthless and cut-throat business people on earth, both legitimate and otherwise.

In the end, the snowflake melted, and I got what I wanted. I was also happy thinking about how her stock options are probably so far underwater that she'll never cash in.

I ended up structuring the license more like an NBA player contract than a typical software license to give us max flexibility and the best pricing (renewal options, prove-it years, opt-outs, etc).
