Religion is the ultimate conservative opiate. It removes the ambiguity and uncertainty from one's mind. Right and wrong becomes easy. Your side goes to heaven and the other side burns in hell, regardless of your religion or sect.

This is the reason why all extreme conservatives are "religious" conservatives. I put religious in quotes because it doesn't have to be religion as it is conventionally understood. Communism with its historical dialectic and promise of the workers ruling the world was a religion. Some leftie tree hugging cults are a religion.

The point is that people who cannot deal with with ambiguities and uncertainties of life get themselves a religion that anchors them and gives them comfort. It does not matter what that religion is.
