I complete agree that a religious organization should be treated similarly to a political organization or a union and that donations should not be automatically exempt. But that is not enough.

I edited my reply to you to point out that doctors and lawyers have to abide by strict rules of conduct and there are ethic boards that oversee their behaviour. I don't see why the same should not be true for preachers. After all, preachers are not that far from psychotherapists.

A pragmatic solution is to have licensed and unlicensed religious and charitable organizations. Licensed ones demonstrate their benevolence and have oversight boards and codified rules of conduct. They will more or less enjoy the same freedoms that they have now.

Unlicensed ones are essentially fringe cults. They don't get any preferential treatment and their conduct is subject to fraud prosecution if it is shown that they caused harm.
