> I gave up trying to use FB's business page for my newsletter that I barely keep running mostly for myself and long-time readers. FB used it as a constant source of spam to get me to pay them to advertise. I think a lot of the trouble is they don't want to make it easy to use their platform to sell your products without paying them a huge fee.

I've found the same thing with FB Marketplace when trying to sell things there. Essentially FB's classified ads, like once existed in the back of newspapers.

I knew as soon as they introduced it for "free" for everyone to use, they'd monetized it as soon as they could. As we know, when something is free, you are the product.

Well, they certainly did monetize it. They constantly badger you to pay for "boosts" or to reach a larger audience, just like with some of the online dating apps, and you'll get constant messages from Messenger.

Smart people camp the new ads there and keep refreshing them to see the newest ones, especially if they want to find things to resell themselves. If you don't respond immediately to them, FB notes that in your ad, and it gives an average for how quickly you're known to respond over time.

Had that happen last year when my parents had to massively downsize and we were trying to sell some old things on FB Marketplace.

I won't use it now if I can avoid it. Craigslist is still great for local stuff, as are smartphone apps like OfferUp and others. There are many other choices out there besides FB for selling anything, just depends on what your goals are and how well you can manage the extremely granular advertising metrics.

Great if your a hedge fund quant who can understand all that madness and like to do it. Not so much for the average Joe or Jane Sixpack trying to run a small business.
