Airlines as a group are the worst managed businesses anywhere. They all think the same way, which is to fill their aircraft to the maximum by reducing economy class legroom, cancelling flights to assure a higher percentage of occupied seats, reducing or eliminating free snacks, soft drinks, coffee, even water, and expecting their customers to be happier!

I can't image what Warren Buffett was thinking (twice) when he bought into USAir, and later Delta, but sold them when he realized that airlines seem to have a self destruction complex.

Consider the differences between the airline management mindset and that of Qualcomm. Airlines subscribe to the old mercantilist philosophy – when possible, cut services, taxes, wages, and salaries. Qualcomm looks for ways to increase consumer demand by catering to all businesses that need or would like more access to wireless communications. Airlines refuse to reroute passengers from cancelled flights to other airlines. Qualcomm caters to all manufacturers of phones or related devices using some form of wireless connectivity. Qualcomm even caters to manufacturers that would prefer to make their own stuff, even if it isn't as good.

As this year moves toward a close, I find that this is the first year in over 30 years that I didn't fly at all. No wonder.
