Retailers Losing Business to Web, New Survey Shows

Personal Online Shopping Exploded in 1997, According to Latest American
Internet User Survey

NEW YORK, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- 75% of adults who use the Web sought online product
and investment information in the 4th quarter 1997, an increase from the 2nd quarter when only
54% of adults used the Web to locate similar information, according to the latest update of the
American Internet User Survey, from cyberdialogue/findsvp.

''30 million adults are using the net to locate product information on products as diverse as travel,
software, investing, and automobiles,'' said Peter Clemente, vice president of Cyber Dialogue. ''In
1997, 11 million adults completed their information retrieval by making an online purchase and most
significantly, one in five of these individuals said they shop less in retail stores as a result of shopping
online.''

The news is not all bad for retail; 36% of product information retrievers reported that they eventually
went to a local store to buy the product, but the trend is for users to start their product search on the
Internet. ''Web merchants stepped up their level of merchandising last year, and online shoppers
responded positively. Users love the fact that they are in charge of the shopping experience and can
find very specific comparison shopping information any time they want without being pressured by
sales personnel,'' Clemente observed.

Additional data points of interest include:
-- 14% of Internet shoppers also say they shop less via mail-order
catalogs
-- The higher the household income, the more likely the individual is to
retrieve product information or purchase online
-- 95% of Internet shoppers said they were satisfied with their online
shopping experience

The American Internet User Survey is a comprehensive overview of Internet users and potential
users. Updated twice a year, the survey covers such topics as business vs. personal use, online
commerce, ISP trends, content preferences and in-depth user demographics. Sponsorship
