If Alcatel keeps going after contracts at what is probably below cost, then AMTX and all other small ADSL companies that offer only DMT solutions had better start getting concerned. Right now, Westell is probably the most competitive with Alcatel with its CAP. The CEO of Westell said that by the time some others come out with their first generation of DMT next spring, Westell will be in its fifth generation of CAP modems. Also, he said that 61 companies responded to the RFP. However, he stated that by 2000, 1% gobal market share would be equal to approximately $4 billion in revenue. The Alcatel contract offer may not be as good for AMTX as first thought. Price is everything and it will be hard for AMTX to compete with Alcatel.
