They are closet authoritarians. They admire "strong leaders" (dictators). They've always been with us. Closet Nazis.

Just as Trump admired Putin, Kim Jong-un and Andrew Jackson. Probably Hitler too but he's too smart to ever say it.

They know it's wildly unpopular viewpoint so they pretend they aren't what everyone knows they are... well not everyone. About half of them are just stupid or ignorant. The rest of them manipulate that portion.
