Always have to smile when I see results from the world happiness index, before even considering their politics and how surveys are used to arrive at results which generally favor Scandinavian countries.

Many Scandinavian countries have higher incidences of alcoholism and suicide than most of the world. Getting back to nature is nice during their short summers but what about during their long and dark cold winters? Can only imagine how lovely that season is closer to the arctic circle.

One thing I've been surprised to learn in my decades of global travel (including a limited visit to Scandinavia) is how many young people from Scandinavian countries, especially those with personal ambition tend to spend most of their time in other countries in Europe, North America and other parts of the world to build a career. They tend to be highly educated, often speak several languages fluently, and find their homelands a bit too boring or limiting in terms of their life goals.

It's not my intent to paint all Scandinavians with such a broad brush as their cradle-to-grave social welfare states suit many very well and am sure many are happy. But my anecdotes are based on meeting dozens of people in dozens of countries, both tourists like me and those that relocated permanently or semi-permanently. For what it's worth, respectfully.
