Zelensky was handpicked by a prominent Ukrainian billionaire who apparently thought it would be fun to have “his boy” as president. Read that at least on one occasion he was actually heard calling Z “his boy” - like, “my boy is doing great”. He sponsored a TV series about an honest young man, a teacher, who unexpectedly becomes President. And he remains honest and serves the people. The show was, actually, called “Servant of the People”.

The show turn out to be the opening of a political campaign - and he was elected

I know nothing about Zelensky’s real political beliefs prior to that. A funny guy, a comedian, actor, dancer. But, he was elected on a peace ticket, on a promise of peace with Russia, no Nato, peace in the Eastern Russian provinces, and so on. The story is that after he was elected, some important power players explained to him what would happen if he “betrayed Ukraine”. So, somehow, they turned him.

As to why Ukrainians are fighting - I think there are many reasons. Some are fighting not for the rascals in Kiev, but for their homeland - which is indeed in danger. Just like millions of Soviets fought in WWII. Others were drafted and have no choice. Most, probably, are doing it for a combination of reasons.

The modern mythology is that we live in the age of Information. The reality is that we live in the age of propaganda. A smartly put together collection of videos can make anyone emotionally vested. At which point, after a person “takes a side” — there is no more reasoning, and no doubts.
