In theaters, "A Man Called Otto" is a touching remake of a Swedish book/movie that clearly wouldn't have been made here except as an Oscar vehicle for Tom Hanks, who will pull enough viewers to make it profitable long-term.

You know the story, irascible old coot lost in bitterness and reluctantly rescued by the goofy neighbors. But it works well and digs a layer or two deeper in the process. Kinda reminded me of "The Art of Racing in the Rain" if you like that niche.
