Until the USSR fell apart, Ukraine had only limited experience of being a self ruled, independent country. Since independence, all possibilities were open to them. I think with decent leadership, their future could have been very good. But, corruption was severe. Even now, large parts of their best land are owned by major international corporations. It’s a sad story.

One of the worst things that happened to them was the 2004 Orange revolution. The idea was simple - if “our” candidate wins - fine. But if the “wrong” candidate wins - roll out the orange jackets, tents, coffee mugs… and scream that the election was stolen. And that’s what happened. And they’re far from stupid. This taught the young nation a very bad lesson.
