I think the point is well taken that Asian crisis might not equal Canadian recession, but I sense that Asian crisis has meant pressure on Canadian dollar. Regardless of the extent of the effects on trade, there does seem to be some effect on capital flows.
At the risk of over-simplifying, I think Canada gets international excess capital that needs to be parked somewhere. In times of crisis this money gets repatriated.
Maybe that's over and Can$ is settling down now.
We'll see.
