I think there is an interest, beyond the usual funny business. And it’s not about Ukraine - it’s about weakening Russia. With all the consequences and implications.

I notice that Milley uses every opportunity to push the idea of using restraint. Doesn’t want to be saddled with a war in that region. Which, I think, is very smart. You start fighting directly with country like Russia in their own neighborhood, you can never know where it leads.
