| | | It would be far better for Russia to be part of Eurostan than part of China.
But Russia was treated as an enemy. Big mistake. When you read about the Roman Republic in its prime, the degree of sophistication is mind boggling. They actually made contradictions in human nature and in power politics work for them. No one had any issues understanding, for example, that “some” corruption was unavoidable - and knew how to look the other way - IF it did not interfere with the health of the republic… and was, on balance, beneficial to the common good. Personal ambitions and greed were fine - for as long as along the way they would also benefit Rome.
In a sense, this attitude was the opposite of the “sophisticated” Après moi, le déluge
In comparison, there is not much known about most of the rest of the world from that period.
And in comparison, we live in much simpler times. We have little self awareness - despite our computers and googles - or, in part, maybe because of them. We know this is the age of propaganda - but it’s always someone else being manipulated, not us. Those doing the manipulating are themselves ignorant kooks. Just doing their jobs. Earning their pay. The blind leading the blind.
Our big hope, at this point, is the plain old survival instinct. Hopefully, as our fearless leaders come close to the abyss, plain old fear will make them step back. They’ll decide why die now? - it’s better to wait for an opportunity to kill the other guy and survive. We need newer better weapons and stuff. Even weapons makers will agree.
Here’s to progress. |
