OT - Mini-Split

I put in a mini-split 2 zone heat pump in my rental and plan to install another 2 zone unit for the other side. These units are super efficient 22 SEER, some models even better.

It seems these are quite common in Asia and only w/i the last few years are available in the US (especially the high efficiency units). The cost to operate is not much and you get the benefit of air conditioning in the summer and heat during the winter.

I believe I got a $300 energy tax credit. The cost of the machines not much but the install can be expensive unless you can do it yourself and then hire electrician & HAVAC person to hook up to main heat pump. The units come pre-charged but on longer line set runs (> 35') you may need to top off w/ R410A refrigerant.

The two zone system was a total of $3K (2 head units & one 2-zone heat pump & 2 line sets; 50' & 30' w/ plastic exterior shield covers to house the insulated line-sets). The install was quoted at $10K but I hired electrician to run the power circuit w/ shut off for $1K (electrician did other work too including replaced breaker box) and I installed the line sets myself.

FWIW, the AC during summer only added about $15/month to my electric bill. We supplement the heat w/ a 95% high energy natural gas furnace, which is nice as in an emergency we have a 2nd source of heat from the heat pump.
