We used to have a pond out front of our cabin. Groyns had been put in for flood control on our bank and a beaver family took up residence, building quite the den. We built a bench on the bank that we could sit and watch the river from. We saw all kinds of animals utilizing the features of that pond.........pipers, raccoons, mt. wren, blue heron, muskrat, Canada goose, hummingbirds, deer and beaver. One evening we were sitting on the "Beaver bench" when mama and papa beaver brought a little fuzz ball out from the den. We sat and watched them frolic in the pond with their baby for almost an hour.
Because of minor and major flooding over the years, the pond is gone, and it's just the creek now, but we still get beaver coming on to the property, so they can chew the alders down. The whole creek/river system where we live has a lot of beaver families living in/on it. The county comes out periodically to knock down their dams that are spread throughout the system. |
