Open Text provides key component of Livelink Suite to U.S. Government Printing Office

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 9) BUSINESS WIRE -Oct. 9, 1996--

Congressional Record, Federal Register among the publications
using Open Text software

Open Text Corp. (OTEXF:NASDAQ) today announced that the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) in Washington, DC has licensed Open Text software for use in a comprehensive On-line and CD ROM publishing system, including access from the Internet.

Over a five year period, the contract has the potential of generating in excess of $1,000,000 in revenue for Open Text.

Using the new software, GPO will provide users with On-line access to
daily updates of government publications, such as the Congressional
Record and Federal Register. GPO will also use Open Text software to
search government information published on CD ROMs. In addition to
traditional CD ROM and On-line access, by the end of the year the public will search GPO's web site using a search facility powered by Open Text's Livelink Search -- a module of the Livelink Intranet suite of products.

A key differentiator for the Open Text software is its ability to index, search, and deliver for viewing large amounts of data created in Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) format. Open Text's
long-standing expertise with SGML forms the bedrock of the GPO
publishing solution.

Open Text is also providing an active SGML viewer. This viewer allows
users to search or interactively browse any number of full text
databases, then download the SMGL sections they want to see. Open Text's Professional Services organization led the way in developing the solution.

"The Congressional Record, the U.S. Government Code of Federal
Regulations and other federal government documents are large, complex
documents that we update daily. We selected the latest index and search technology from Open Text, combined with their viewer for Standard General Markup Language (SGML) documents. The Open Text software will help the GPO system provide user-friendly, fast, and accurate access to key government documents for our elected representatives, professional researchers and the web-surfing public," said a spokesperson from GPO.

"We're pleased to provide an extensive solution, using a key component
of our Livelink Suite, to the United States government," said Tom
Jenkins, President, Open Text Corporation. "The scalability and
robustness of our search technology, our extensive SGML expertise and
technical capabilities, coupled with the expertise of our Professional
Services staff, are key factors in helping GPO provide its user
community with ongoing access to this important government
information."
