Don't take the official textbook version of history as the ultimate truth. That is, as you indicate, "manipulated" to suit the prevailing agenda of the day. Become a historian yourself and accumulate the knowledge the way they have learned to do.

For example, unless all the books are burned, you can discover what life was like in 15th century Japan by reading the literature of the times.

I took a great history course at University which taught us to do exactly that with the far East. We had to reconstruct history from the equivalent of Novels and Poetry of the age. One of the most valuable courses I ever took. It has helped to enable me to portend much of the future for my entire life.

Sometimes it takes a few decades to see it all happen, but my batting average is close to 1000. As a result, I have often been contacted by previous acquaintances and told. "Hey. Do you remember when you said xyz was coming? We all thought you had flipped your lid but it turns out, you were exactly right. It just took a while".
