Good video on the spy balloon and the known facts thus far:



It was indeed brought down by a Sidewinder that basically popped the balloon, leaving the actual machinery largely "intact." Going in with guns would have risked causing more damage to the machinery than needed.

Also, it's been reported that Brandon wanted that thing shot down ASAP, but the military advised him to wait until it's over the water. If true, that means the military wasn't too concerned about what that spy balloon has already observed and what else it could observe from 60,000 feet in the air. (I still have my doubts about this, though.)

Finally, the balloon itself was in no way a "weather balloon," and China should STFU regarding it being "civilian" in nature. Among other things, it had equipment that can correct its course, so it did not drift off uncontrollably.
