Our political deep thinkers didn’t want Europe to become “addicted” to cheap Russian gas - and to depend more on ours. While the Ukraine war is turning out problematic in many ways - it’s definitely destroying any fuzzy warm feelings between Western Europe and Russia. With every shipment of weapons from Western Europe, the odds for any kind of reconciliation keep dropping.

It almost seems like blowing up the pipeline was superfluous - the Russians had already re-oriented their energy sales towards the Asian markets. But… who knows. Europeans are complaining that they have to pay for US LNG several times what they paid for an equivalent amount of Russian gas. After the war, that could become a huge inducement for the Euros to start approaching Russia with apologies for their wartime mistakes. Which, of course, could become a great political and economic issue for the US.
