FAA temporarily closes Montana airspace after 'radar anomaly' spots airborne 'object'

The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily shut down airspace over part of Montana on Saturday while the Defense Department sent a fighter jet to investigate a "radar anomaly" after another airborne "object" was spotted.

News of the incident was first revealed by Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT), who tweeted Saturday evening that an "object" was spotted over his district, and later confirmed by Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Steve Daines (R-MT). The North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement shortly after the airspace was reopened that a jet sent up to assess the object found nothing.

"NORAD detected a radar anomaly and sent fighter aircraft to investigate," the defense command said in a joint statement with U.S. Northern Command. "Those aircraft did not identify any object to correlate to the radar hits. NORAD will continue to monitor the situation."

"The FAA closed some airspace in Montana to support Department of Defense activities. The airspace has been reopened," a statement from the FAA said.

The NORAD statement conflicts with Rosendale's tweet, which claimed that an “object” that could “interfere with commercial aircraft” had been spotted. Tester and Daines have vowed to investigate the matter and publicize what they could of their findings.

The situation occurred hours after a U.S. fighter jet shot down a separate, unidentified cylindrical object flying over Canada, and one day after President Joe Biden ordered another "unidentified object" shot down over Alaska. The "object" in question on Saturday evening was spotted over Havre, Montana, which is located 30 miles south of the Canadian border.

Saturday's incident also follows a series of similar episodes this month, including the U.S. shooting down what the DoD described as a Chinese spy balloon off the Atlantic coast after it traveled across the country. The FAA issued similar flight restrictions while responding to the balloon.
