Well, the idea that that various bacteria can accumulate on masks including the bacterium that causes bacterial pneumonia, possibly eventually provide a medium for growth, and since a person is breathing through that mask, provide increased opportunity for the lungs to be exposed to higher than normal concentrations - especially when one is in a weakened state due to viral infection.

I know, my English teacher hates me.

In any event, sounds like a reasonable hypothesis, no?

Yes studies would be nice, and if there haven't been any (really - why not?), then "proof"/evidence of this mechanism is lacking.

Now scientists know that when something is studied properly,
if it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and looks like a duck,
sometimes they find that it really isn't a duck.

However the probability is that - yes, indeed it is a duck.
