The Chernobyl Cloud hit Scotland while I was there.

It didn't kill all the fish, unlike this incident.

Margaret Thatcher and the government at the time said it was OK to go back to work.

Only I had just come off a nuclear safety course (NRPB at the time) at the time, and knew NOT to go outside, especially if it started raining... which it did. Ordered my family to the centre of the apartment and stay there for several days... which we all did. The rain washed away the problem after a few days, but of course the particles were still in the ground. Nobody checked for those apart from the nearby nuke power station as part of their normal procedures. Sure enough they found a very dangerous particle, and it was safely disposed of. Lucky it was the only one that landed on the whole of Scotland eh?

The only reason I know the following fact is I worked in health insurance for a while and had to track down why accounts had stopped payments in the following decades. Usually it was a farm worker, or some other outside work occupation, and the customer had passed on. Cause of death typically Leukaemia. None of this made official news.

Bad news is buried by the government.

more.
