That's actually significant because it demonstrates that Ukraine now has longer-range rocket artillery.

Previously Mr. HIMARS wasn't able to reach Mariupol because its distance from the front lines was right at the limit of 75 km. To hit targets in Mariupol would mean positioning the launchers too close to the front line, which is way too risky especially when Ukraine only has 20 of them.

That's why, after Mr. HIMARS made his debut last year, RuZZians moved most of their valuable targets about 70 km away from the front lines. Mariupol then became an important supply hub for RuZZian logistics, because it was just outside of HIMARS range.

Now with longer-ranged rockets, Mariupol is no longer safe. In fact, Ukraine can now strike stationary targets all across the so-called "land bridge to Crimea."

This will force the RuZZians to further decentralize their logistical hubs and further complicate their supply routes.

As for the strike on Mariupol, in the short term this will blunt RuZZia's southern offensive, which was already hitting a wall of death. Long-term, this will help prepare Ukraine for a counteroffensive in the direction of Mariupol and later Crimea.

And there is nothing PooTin can do about it, because he has already played most of his escalation cards.
