I've never been one to accept government studies

A major logical fallacy is known as "proof by authority". There is no reason to accept the conclusions of someone or some organization just because they claim to be an authority. However, if you don't trust anyone then you either need to become an expert yourself or you wind up making decisions based on hunch or supernatural signs.

I don't blindly trust conclusions from scientific studies. There is always the possibility of mistake or fraud. The whole process of science means it is a competition among motivated and trained people who are all interested in maximizing their share of glory or success, which requires good results and that means pointing out the flaws of the studies and scientists that are in the way of their advancement. This makes it somewhat of a self-correcting information source.
