so, how do we explain the phenomenon?

I think the biggest threat to our health these days is in the food supply. Crops tolerant to glyphosate are now dominant in North America , which even if the herbicide is not causing problems directly, it does lead to a limited diet where most people only eat one kind of corn, and one kind of protean. Add to this refined fructose and you have a very unhealthy diet. Not one unhealthy enough to kill you right away, just unhealthy enough to statistically die early.
