Well, this has to be the worst week for the Contest so far this year (Cue sad trombones and piano playing Stormy Weather.) Not only did the NASDAQ Composite end the week -3.3% in the red, the biotech indices were both hammered, -4.8%(NASDAQ) and -6.1% (S&P). The biotech performance erased the profits of the first 8 weeks, so that both indices moved from net profit to significant losses YTD.

It’s a bad sign for the contest portfolios that the fifth best stock for the week only managed a +5.2% gain (compared to their initial price). The week’s best, ELYM +22%, was pretty anemic compared to the winners in previous weeks, e.g. last week’s top performer for the week was OCUL, up +85%. The relatively thinly traded ELYM’s behavior was a turn around from the previous week’s tumble as they announced laying off 55% of the workforce and pausing development of a Depression drug, while “reprioritizing its pipeline”. At the end of the week they announced that their CEO was stepping down. We’ll see if the market thinks a good move. The worst performer for the week, FULC -89%, was from the huge plunge at the Friday market opening, responding to the news that the FDA had halted a key clinical trial.

The top and bottom five YTD performers were were mostly unchanged, with only two or three stocks in each set exchanging places.

So its probably not much of a surprise that every portfolio was in the red for the week, the average portfolio value dropping -$7.5k. YTD the contestants are still looking decent, with average and median profits of +$14.2k and +$18.3k. A few more weeks like this and the average portfolio will slide into the red. One more portfolio moved from YTD profit to loss, joining two others in that category last week.

The best performing portfolio for the week, ARTHUR RADLEY a near wash with a loss of only -$219 (and +$6.2k better than the S&P biotech index), moved their YTD standing from 9th to 4th place. Examining their portfolio, the individual stocks showed no change more than $1.1k for the week. That $1.1k was a profit in EYEN, which is far and away their best YTD performer, an ROI of +82%, so that their YTD profit of +$22k, represents a move from ninth to fourth in the YTD standings.

BLADERUNNER still has a hold on the top spot YTD (+$66k) despite turning in the worst performance for the week, -$15k$. Their cushion continues to drop, another roughly -$5k weekly weakening, so that $42k separates them from the new second place contestant, TOMATO ,who benefited from back to back 2nd place returns for the week. Still, at this rate, BLADERUNNER has enough of a head start that they will stay at the top for another eight weeks.
