I’d have suggested visiting Haymarket. Lots of open air vegetable stands. I used to get pizza by the slice for a buck, served on a piece of shirt cardboard. Last time I was in Boston a few years ago, I went by and the pizza place is still there, though the pizza was $2.50 a slice. The North End? Butcher shops with pigs heads hanging in the window, great coffee shops and restaurants like Francesca’s.
