Re <<smart contracts are not themselves able to change ... Ethereum ... there is no way to alter them>>

I know your sentiment, but, and however, check out the CBC protocol of ETH
blockchains-expert.com
Some ETH folks did not want to slog on the path of Casper by ETH, , and decided to start clean-sheet to do Casper (CSPR)

Casper (CSPR) today is what Ethereum (ETH) wishes to be tomorrow, and that road is a true long slog. In the enterprise arena, Casper (CSPR) is arguably the true, original, as in OG, first-mover.

Casper contracts, NFTs, can be permanently immutable or upgradable, depending on position of software toggle, and the position is transparent

In the case of setting to 'upgradable', the history is as before, immutable, but the future is upgraded, again, once more, twice over, as many times as necessary by the NFT sponsor, as long as toggle transparently set to NOT-IMMUTABLE.

One fair question, and that be, 'why do anything remotely like such?'

Answer, for example, for something like a to be closed real estate deal, or an IP transfer, what is done should, must, and shall be permanently done-done, and given such, that smart contract / NFT software toggle for immutability must be set at 'never again changed'.

However, in the case of airline loyalty points, game tokens, and any other consumer loyalty points, when the program is upgraded by the sponsoring enterprise, say United Airlines, Epic Games, and any number of consumer goods companies, as their centralised loyalty programs, game versions, game money across games bridged from game to game, iterations, changes, ... one does not want to put to waste a whole lot of issued NFTs already in consumer wallets, but instead JUST upgrade their tokens' future enmass the next time they open their wallets, automatically. IOW, no hard-forks and swaps, but just done-done by software upgradability.

In the meantime the issued NFTs can be traded amongst the consumers as they would playing cards without worry over future fungibility of non-fungible tokens.

It, the protocol, is beautiful, elegant, sexy, slutty, as desired, and altogether geeewhizbangohwhoawee, and its designed-in innards, is necessary as far as true enterprise adoption (as opposed to institutional hoarding) is concerned.
