| | | It’s the first Contest Report in March, and as tradition has it, the Market came roaring in like a lion … well maybe a puma. Anyway a happy change from all the red ink spilled in the last report.
The NASDAQ composite and our two biotech indices turned in near identical performance, up +2.5-2.6%. But YTD the broader market is massively outperforming the biotechs, up by +12% for the NASDAQ Composite, but -1.5% in the red for the NASDAQ biotech index, and a wash (+0.05%) for the S&P biotechs.
In terms of individual stocks, this week’s winner was KZIA turning in an increase of +42% of its initial price. This was a general increase over Wednesday to Friday, rather than a sharp jump, with no particular explanation from the Yahoo News Feed. ALONER’s 10% stake in KZIA was enough to make them the third place portfolio performer for the week. The second place stock was JSPR (+33%), also for no particular reason. JSPR should be familiar as the stock that had a runaway first month of the year. The second month has been not so much, but this week’s performance brings it back to near its peak at the start of February. And as goes JSPR so goes our first place portfolio BLADERUNNER.
There recent average and median portfolio P/L wa a decent +$2.8k and $1.5k, respectively. Four portfolios were in the red for the week. The YTD portfolio average and median values (+$17k and +$18k) show a stronger performance by the contestants, even compared to the NASDAQ composite's +$12k, so overall the contestants seem to have made some pretty savvy choices.
As was already mentioned, the strong performance in JSPR for the week, earned BLADERUNNER a weekly return of +$12.9k, more than double than second place ARTHUR RADLEY. When we look at ARTHUR RADLEY’s individual choices for his portfolio, we see that his10% bet on ASRT (4th place mover for the week +25% on some positive analyst mentions) and a 20% position EYEN (up +11% for the week which was enough to bump him up two places to reach second place in the YTD standings after BLADERUNNER. BLADERUNNER can thank JSPR for increasing his hold on the top spot, with a separation of +$50k between ARTHUR RADLEY and himself.
