I never heard of a Yanmar engine before two weeks ago, but it is plain that they are far from rare. The internet has several websites selling
Yanmar engines. I have been looking for the 3TNE84 industrial
engine that is used in the Super Car. I found two versions. One
is is the G2A that has 30 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and the other is
T-G2A that has 37.5 horsepower at 3000 rpm. Another website
should be interesting. It has Yanmar diesel engine-driven generators.
This is the same technology Joe was talking about today.
The site is: starpwr.com and
it gives specs that a technophile can relate to. For instance, the big
YIN 50 generator produces 36.48 kilowatts burning 3.4 gallons
per hour. That's a baseline, because the engine has to run at
a constant rpm to produce 60-hz power. If you know what the cost of diesel is, you can easily calculate the cost per kilowatt hour. Then if you factor in that the pulse charge system will reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 %, you can calculate the savings. What does diesel cost per gallon anyway? If it is $1.00 per gallon,
I get $0.0932 per kilowatt hour. With the pulse charging, I get
$0.0652 per kilowatt hour. If you also know what you pay for
a kilowatt hour of electricity where you live, you can figure
whether it would be profitable, since the utility would have to pay
you the same rate it charges you. Certainly no individual is going
into the power generation business by himself. But some business
group may find the economies of scale attractive with 1,000
pulse charged diesel engine generators if President Gore offers
tax credits....
