Well, any one who has been listening to financial news this last weeks will not be surprised to hear this week’s one word summary: “Bad”. In fact to was a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week.” That is to say, more or less typical of last year’s reports. Nasdaq Composite down -4.7%, and the biotech indices down worse (the S&P Biotech index shed -9.4%). The YTD performance of the NASDAQ Composite is still in the black (+$6.4k for that $100k portfolio), but that’s roughly half of what it was just last week (+$12k). Also both biotech indices are solidly in the red, YTD.
Meanwhile, as reported on twitter, a slew of biotechs are saying they have absolutely no money sitting in limbo at SVB, and those that do are saying it’s only a little bit of money. “De minimus.”
If I had many millions of cash go into limbo, perhaps never to be seen again, I’d probably use a phrase a little stronger than, “Business as usual.”
Another phrase common amongst companies affected by SVB is, “Can I make payroll?” investorshub.advfn.com
The contest portfolio stock choices, less than six per cent of the stocks were positive for the week. If you look at the top 5 recent performance stocks, the fact that the very best BLCM, a thinly traded stock with no particular reason in the news feeds, was only +12% of their initial price, and then performance drops sharply, and after the top five you have CDTX (+0.7%) and PMGM (+0.13%). The rest were in the red. The very worst was STTK, down -53%, continuing a general downward slide since their fourth quarter earnings call the previous week, wiping out most of the gain they posted for the year.
The next big losers for the week, JSPR (-40%) and OCUL (-37%), are both top YTD performers, now a little less stellar than before (JSPR:+260% YTD; OCUL:+73%).
Every portfolio was in the red for the week, with the median change in portfolio value for the week was -$13k. The YTD portfolio values are still mostly in the black, with the median and average values are both hanging in there with +$3k,+$4.2k respectively. But the number of portfolios at a loss YTD has increased from 4 to 6, almost half the contestants. The best for the week was last year’s winner GENEGURU, dropping only -$3.4k. Once again a bad week in JSPR translated to a bad week for our first place YTD portfolio, BLADERUNNER, -$18.6k, but he’s still top for the year, +$60k. Below BLADERUNNER was a fair bit of mixing in the positions of the 2nd through 6th position.
